ENG 317H — Poetry Writing (Honors)
Building on the skills developed in a multi-genre workshop (ENG 116 or ENG 311), this course focuses on poetry from the perspective of a poet writing in a community of poets. Students are taught to give and receive substantive and constructivefeedback on poetry in workshops. Through the study of published poems and work by peers, students develop an understanding of prosody, poetic craft, and poetic structure. An emphasis on reflection, analysis, and revision gives students the tools necessary to produce a portfolio of poems while seeing themselves as entering a community of poets with an awareness of poetry’s complex and diverse histories.
