ENG 214 — Intermediate Composition: Research Writing

This intermediate composition course builds on English 101 writing skills to combine analysis of scholarly writing with the instruction needed for students to conduct their own semester-long academic research projects. With an emphasis on the writing process, students will learn how to create solid research questions, apply different research methods, effectively organize ideas in writing, and compose a well-structured research paper. Students will design their own research proposal, compose an annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and synthesize sources into an argumentative research essay using MLA format. Three hours of library instruction are included to fine-tune use of academic databases and other library resources. This course is designed for any writer seeking to improve or build upon research and writing skills. Prerequisite: ENG 101. Three lecture hours per week. Gen. Ed.
