CHM 34 — Biofuels and Bioproducts
This course covers the chemistry behind the production of sugars from plants, andthe biology of converting these sugars into commodity molecules. Specific attentionwill be paid to biosynthetic pathways, plant cell wall architecture, microbialmetabolism, biofuels, and valorization of by-product streams. A hands-on laboratory component for the course will introduce students to chemical and biological reactors to teach skill sets required for these transformations via microbial cell culture and modern analytical chemistry methods. Applications of biofuels and bioproducts will be examined within the context of their commercial success and viability.
