SOC 40 — Sociology of Social Movements
This course is designed to introduce students to the nature, causes, and consequences of social movements, both in the United States and worldwide. In this class, several types of social movements will be examined, such as: the civil rights movement, feminist movements, environmental movements, religious movements, labor movements, and LGBTQ movements, among others. The course also examines the extent to which social activism on both the political Left and Right has played a major role in U.S. history and around the world in bringing about social change such as the end of slavery, votes for women, the 40-hour week, third world independence movements and clean water laws, among others.
