SPN 108 — Spanish for Health Professions

3 credits · 3 hours

This is a beginner Spanish course designed for students who, because of occupational necessity, will communicate with Spanish-speaking patients and hospital personnel who may have limited English proficiency. Through coursework, readings, and simple conversations modeled after authentic healthcare contexts, students will learn: practical vocabulary related to the healthcare field and to students’ particular interests and specializations; the linguistic connections between Spanish and English by means of cognates (words that sound similar and have the same meaning across languages); pronunciation and basic reading, writing, and listening comprehension skills; and health-related cultural and social issues important to Spanish-speaking communities. This course is not for heritage or native speakers of Spanish.
