ENGL220 — Business and Technical Writing

3 credits · 3 hours

In this course, students will present technical information clearly, concisely, and correctly to a non-technical audience. They will analyze and apply rhetorical principles in their writing, using both traditional forms of written expression (such as instructions, letters, reports) and newer media forms (blogs, email, e-resumes). They will learn to integrate the written word with the appropriate visuals in order to produce effective messages; explore contemporary issues such as gender-neutrual writing and plan language; and examine ethical considerations of writing in the workplace. Case studies will emphasize the importance of historical perspective and cultural context. Due to the nature of business and technical writing, the topics and assignments may evolve over time.

Prerequisites: ENGL121
