IART109 — Issues in 20th Century Art
THis course examines developments in western art and architecture from the beginning of the 20th century to the decline of Modernism (c.1980), looking in particular at activities in France, Germany, Britain, Italy the USSR and the USA. I will focus on the cultural questions raised in this period. What was modern about modern art? What was the idea behind abstract art? Do art and politics mix? Were there any famous 20th-century women artists? What led to post-modernism? The principal movements such as Cubism, Surrealism and Pop Art will be covered, and the prominent names in 20th century art such as PIcasso, Duchamp, Wright, Warhol and O'Keeffe will be set in context. A good command of English (aural, written and oral) is needed to follow this course successfully.
