IART271 — Early Renaissance/Art History
The Early Renaissance denotes the period from approximately 1400 to 1500. In Italy those 100 years (particularly in Florence) witnessed an extraordinary coming together of artistic talent, a passionate interest in the antique past, civic pride, and an optimistic belief in "Man as the measure of all things. This course examines the principal artists and architects who contributed to the Early Renaissance. The stress is mainly on Florentine artists such as Donatello, Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Botticelli, with reference to th social and political conditions, to patronage, to the artists' personalities, and to their training and the materials they used. Broader issues such are also examined. This course concludes with the first part of Leonard's career and takes the young Michelangelo up to the age of 30 when he completed his statue of David.
