Molecular Crystals. Ionic crystals estimation of ionic radii, radius ratio and ist importance, Madelung constatns and estimation of lattice energies, the Born-Haber Cycle. Structure of metals. Band theory as applied to conductor, semiconductors and insulators. Bonding in transition metal complexes, crystal field theory, molecular orbital approach, bonding ligands. Cluster compounds, multiple metal to metal bonds. The influence of bonding on the physical properties of materials is emphasised throughout the module.
