IFAS105 — History of Fashion Design

This class introduces students to the main historical elements and concepts of fashion design by following the evolution of Italian Fashion from its birth until the present. The class is divided into two parts: Part I-a review of Italian costume and fashion through the centuries; Part II- a presentation of the Italian lok in contemporary fashion design. Italian fashion is studied in an international constant link is provided between the present and the past due to the fact that fashion is, especially in Italy, the result of what it was in history. The progressive development of fashion outfits are emphasized, and for the contemporary aspect, topics covered include street style and analysis of today's Italian designers' public images. On-site visits will illustrate the dominating role played by Florence in fashion from its origins until now.
