This course examines US influence in the reconstruction of Europe after WWII, the Marshall Plan and the development of the idea of European integration, the US as a world power with a permanent military presence in Europe, and the birth and evolution of NATO. Students will analyze tension over decolonization in Suez, the 'Special relationship" between the US and Britain, tension with France and harmony with Germany, the end of the Cold War, the new EU, and the new NATO. Evolution of Transatlantic relations after 9/11 and during and after the second Gulf War are also examined
