IHIS219 — Images of Love in Mediev Eur
Contemporary western ideas about love were profoundly influenced by the society and culture of the western and central Europe in the middle ages. This interdisciplinary seminar will explore the meaning of love in medieval culture, as expressed in art, literature, music, and spiritual writing. Cultural expressions will be examined in the context of social change in the period 1100-1450. Topics will include images of love in art, the literature and music of courtly love, debates over the possiblity of love in marriage, the changing role of women in society, and the use of maternal, romantic, or erotic imagery of spiritual writing.
