IPHI223 — Confucianism and Taoism
The aims of this subject are to familiarise students with some important concepts and doctrines of the two main streams of Chinese philosophy, Confucianism and Taoism. Regarding Confucianism, the focus will be on Confucius and Mencius. As to Taoism, students will concentrate on Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. The former stream provides a rational justification of the Chinese social system, whereas the latter represents the idealisation of nature.
