This unit examines theories of the state from a Marxist and a Liberal/Democratic perspective. THe Marxist view looks at the following areas: Ownership of the means of production; societal changes from feudalism to communism; the nature of the state and its role in the structure of power; historical dvelopment and social class; class consciousness and political change. The liberal/ democratic view looks at the nature of the unitary state; federalism and the separation of powers; electoral systems; the nature of decision making and political representation.
