3 credits · 3 hours

CLT 252 - Advanced Histological Techniques CLT 252 - Advanced Histological Techniques A course focused on the theoretical basis for preparing tissue for histological evaluation and study, including the chemical basis and physical principles of fixation, processing, and staining animal tissue specimens for light microscopy. Emphasis is on routine paraffin techniques, but also includes frozen section techniques, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. Summarize the theory and practice of techniques used in standard histological preparation and staining of tissues to be evaluated by light microscopy. Describe histological procedures for tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. Describe routine and special stains used to prepare tissue for evaluation. Describe rapid diagnostic techniques, immunohistochemical and enzyme histochemical techniques, decalcification, and cytology procedures. Recognize possible technical errors and standard troubleshooting techniques.
