HIS 155 - War and the Western World HIS 155 - War and the Western World A survey of world patterns of warfare from their earliest roots to the present examining the interaction of warfare and society. Major emphasis is on how warfare and military developments ed shape society and its institutions, as well as a distinctive Western style of warfare. Specific concern will be given to the role of gunpowder, industrialization, and nationalism, as well as economic, social, and cultural factors. How the West used its distinctive style of warfare in its attempt to dominate the rest of the world and spread Western influence and institutions will also be considered, as well as the consequences.
