COM-211 — Communication & Gender

Through this course, students will learn and engage with a range of theories and concepts regarding sex, gender, and communication. Materials will examine how gender influences and is influenced by communication in a variety of contexts, including interpersonal relationships, and mass, social, and digital media depictions, as well as in the broader public discourse. Students will explore the social construction of gender and its multifaceted intersections with other social categories like race, class, sexuality, and ability. Through critical analysis and personal reflection, students will critique gender’s power within larger social structures and enhance their own abilities to communicate effectively and inclusively.
