EDU-205 — Teaching Mathematics in Grades K-8
This course examines content knowledge and methodologies for teaching mathematics to Elementary and/or Middle School students. It is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in elementary or secondary education. Topics include the development of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, proportions, geometry, statistics and some algebraic concepts, with a focus on problem solving and critical thinking. Emphasis is placed on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and the Massachusetts Elementary and Secondary Standards for Mathematics. Students will learn pedagogical strategies for K-8 mathematics instruction such as how to use math manipulatives, fostering a growth mindset, supporting productive struggle in mathematical learning and facitilating mathematical discourse with diverse learners.
