EDUC 120 — Characteristics of Children with Special Needs in Educational Settings
This course provides an introduction to special education. It explores the historical foundations of the field, the characteristics of individuals with exceptionalities, evidence-based instructional strategies, and the legal frameworks governing special education. Students will gain knowledge of the roles of various participants in the referral, assessment, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes, as well as the impact of Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) on educational practices. The course emphasizes creating responsive learning environments tailored to the needs of diverse learners. This course is part of an approved set of courses that fulfill the requirements for Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) approval for PK-22 Special Education. Writing assignments relevant to the discipline are required.
