GWSS 205 — Transnational Feminisms
This course explores the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality through a transnational feminist lens. This course is a transdisciplinary study into examining how global power structures, colonial legacies, and economic systems shape marginalized people’s experiences across diverse cultural contexts. Students will analyze feminist movements, theories, and practices from various regions, emphasizing the importance of local knowledge and grassroots activism. Topics covered include global labor markets, migration, reproductive rights, and environmental justice, with a focus on how these issues affect people of marginalized genders differently across national boundaries. Students will engage critically with key debates in transnational feminist theory, including the tensions between universal rights and cultural relativism, and the challenges of building global solidarity while respecting local differences. Writing assignments as appropriate to the discipline, totaling at least 2500 words, is required.
