ENGL 220 — Medical Narratives (3 Credits, Fall)

The goal of this course is to help students think critically about illness, care, and healing, and to use the medical humanities, in particular literature, to enrich the development of durable skills, especially emotional intelligence, and intercultural awareness. Students will engage with published medical narratives authored by patients, providers, families, and scholars, including texts that center the experiences of people from historically marginalized groups. Readings will emphasize firsthand accounts of experiences with illness, healing, and healthcare systems, augmented by opinion and analysis, scholarship, and explanatory texts. PREREQ: ENGL 101 . (This CWI course meets Idaho State Board of Education GEM competency requirements for GEM 5 - Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing.) . (3 lecture hours, 0 lab hours, 3 credits)
