MUSI 109 — Survey of World Music (3 Credits, Fall/Spring)
This course explores a variety of musical cultures throughout the world including, but not limited to: Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Near East, Eastern Europe and the South Pacific. Students will gain an appreciation for the diversity of music throughout the world as well as the people that perform it. This understanding will be fostered by the study of qualities that distinguish one style of music from another, and the cultural and social-historical factors that shape the creation of music. Lectures, readings, video and audio recordings and live presentations will equip students to compare their own musical heritage with those of other peoples around the world. (This CWI course meets the institutional competency requirements in Global Perspectives.) . (3 lecture hours, 0 lab hours, 3 credits)
