OTA 206 — Pediatric Occupational Therapy (5 Credits, Fall)
This lecture/lab course provides an introduction to the etiology, symptoms, prognosis, and treatment of pediatric and adolescent disorders and their impact on occupational performance areas and components. Frames of reference, intervention theories, and techniques are explored, as well as the disabilities commonly associated with childhood and techniques used for remediation. The course will focus on the disabilities that impair function in this population and introduce the student to occupational therapy as practiced with children and adolescents. The lab portion of the class provides a hands-on introduction to treatment planning and intervention implementation techniques commonly used with pediatric and adolescent disorders and their impact on occupational performance areas and components. Lab sessions emphasize the application of theory to treatment techniques for specific conditions and provide the opportunity for students to explore the role of occupational therapy (OT) while including and educating family and caregivers regarding the child's OT care. PREREQ: Admission to the Occupational Therapy Assistant program. COREQ: BIOL 228 , BIOL 228L , OTA 100 , and OTA 170 . (3 lecture hours, 4 lab hours, 5 credits)
