This course examines the development of the United States from pre-contact indigenous societies through 1877. This course emphasizes some fundamental themes in American history regarding state formation, political power, international affairs, slavery and freedom, definitions of citizenship, and the economic, cultural, and political movement towards Civil War and Reconstruction.
