SS 213 - School and Society SS 213 - School and Society This course surveys American education and schooling in social, philosophical, and historical contexts. Topics include formal and informal education, as well as education in preliterate societies. Selected issues to be explored include education’s historical, philosophical, and social foundations, democracy and education, diversity and desegregation, testing, sex discrimination, educational excellence and international competition, curriculum debates, and questions of local, state, and national school education control and finance. Videos and guest speakers may supplement readings. Attendance at one school board meeting is required. Course
