ENGL 231 — English Language Studies
(formerly EN 231) Introduces English language studies through a linguistics perspective, promoting a systematic approach to the study of language. Focuses on prescriptive versus descriptive approaches to grammar and syntax; sub-disciplines of linguistics: phonology, morphology, semantics, stylistics, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics; English language variation, change, and development; and the role of English language in a multicultural society.
