MUSC 201 — Music Cultures of the World
(formerly MU 108) Provides an introduction to the indigenous musical expressions of countries around the world, including African, Asian, Latin American, native North American, and the Caribbean, emphasizing a global perspective and artistic interaction of world cultures. Considers origins, unique instruments, significant genres, notable artists, and cultural functions. Selected pieces are examined in detail through directed listening. Topical writing assignments are required.
