EN 217 - African American Literature EN 217 - African American Literature Credit Hour(s): 3 ( 3 , 0 ) This course is designed for the close study of fiction and non-fiction works by African American writers, including historical and theoretical foundational knowledge including but not limited to gender, race, and class. Students will read, analyze, and discuss literature from the beginning when enslaved African Americans began to tell their story through oral storytelling, folktales, song, and spiritual engagement. They will continue with literary works from Reconstruction, the rise of the New Negro, the Harlem Renaissance (including art, poetry, music & dance), modernism, and postmodernism with authentic and relevant primary source material.
