EMET 520 - Physical Chemistry of Iron & Steelmaking EMET 520 - Physical Chemistry of Iron & Steelmaking 3 credits (Hrs: 3 Lec.) This course combines physical chemistry and pyrometallurgy principles to describe iron and steel production. Modern refining unit operations are introduced and the importance of phase equilibria for iron and steel is emphasized. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe the unit operations of iron and steelmaking, describe the refining reactions involved in steelmaking, and describe the function of slags and refractories in iron smelting operations.
