The course should: 1. Explain the significance or uniqueness of ethnic literature. 2. Address at least two of the following sets of themes: racial/cultural oppression and resistance; notions of identity, community and family; assimilation, double consciousness, mestizo consciousness 3. Examine the ways in which minority groups (defined along racial, ethnic, sexual, class, as well as gendered terms) have been historically marginalized. 4. Display how the narrative of historically marginalized people can function as a counter-narrative to the stories, myths, and histories of the dominant, hegemonic class. 5.
