BLS 130 — Black Women Writers
This course examines the works of Black women writers spanning the 18th through 21st centuries. Students will analyze the thoughts, concerns, and words of Black women through their writings – slave narratives, speeches, essays, novels, poetry, short stories, and plays. Selected readings highlight the ways race, class, gender, and other social constructs intersect. Additionally, audio visual resources will help to underscore central themes including migration, motherhood, labor, power, nature, trauma, and love. This course centers Black women as agents of their lives, thinkers, theorizers, and examines the many ways Black women have reimagined our world.
