SPA 350 — Hostos & Marti

This course follows the lives of Eugenio Maria de Hostos and Jose Marti through their literature, their endeavors, achievements and contributions to the struggles for freedom, education and progress in the Americas. Students will read, analyze, discuss and gain an understanding of these authors' major works in a historical, political, and literary context. Students will study Hostos and Mart's historical presence in New York City in the later part of the 19th century, and their activism for the self-determination and social development of their peoples. Students will also gain an appreciation for similarities and differences between these two important writers, and will explore their legacies to Latin American and Latino intellectual and political pursuits
