MUS 100 — Fundamentals of Music

This course is an introduction to the rudiments of music with the basics of music notation examined through writing, music reading, listening, and sight singing. The elements of music as used in a variety of genres and historical periods included: melody, rhythm, harmony, and form. Topics covered include melodic and rhythmic notation, scales, key signatures, and principles of harmony. Ear training and sight singing enrich and expand the written study. This course is for students with little or no background in music and is recommended for music students with no prior knowledge of music theory.
