OTS101 — Introduction to Occupational Therapy and Human Occupation

OTS101 serves as the foundational course for the Occupational Therapy Assistant program. It introduces students to the profession of occupational therapy, covering key concepts such as Occupation, engagement, participation, occupational performance, activity analysis, and evidence-based practice. The course emphasizes cultural humility, health literacy, diversity, individuality, equity, inclusion, wellness, and the connection between occupation and the person within the context of Occupational Therapy Practice. Students will explore general health concepts as well as the philosophy, history, language and ethics of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy practice. The course delves into the therapeutic use of self, and the values, roles, and responsibilities of Occupational Therapy Practitioners. Concepts of practitioner balance are introduced including productivity, pleasure, self-care, and restoration. Professional competency, state license, and national certification are introduced as a essential component of advancing and engaging in practitionership. OTS 101 includes both an integrated learning lab as well as an open-demonstration lab, providing students with opportunities to learn, practice, and then demonstrate basic clinical competency and teaching -learning processes. A self-paced online medical terminology module is also included in this course.
