RTS223 — Mechanical Ventilation

This course will provide the student with the principles of mechanical ventilators and management of the mechanically-ventilated patient. The discussion will focus on establishing the need for, and the initiation and modification of, mechanical ventilation based on patient situation/disease, protocols, and evidence- based medicine. In addition, the student will develop protocols using current evidence-based research. Mechanical ventilators will be classified according to their capabilities and specifications. Specific ventilators and ventilatory techniques, both invasive and non-invasive, will be presented. Simulations of clinical scenarios will be presented so the student may apply knowledge and skills and learn to work as a member of a collaborative healthcare team.
