New York City's development; its history; its origin as a Dutch trading post; position in colonial culture and society; role in the American Revolution and the founding of the American Republic; growth as a great commercial, transportation, manufacturing, and banking center; citizens' attitude toward slavery and race relations; importance as the center of immigration; growth and expansion into neighboring communities; and its problems and difficulties as a modern megalopolis.
