Surveys the experiences of African Americans in the history of the United States, with emphasis on the role of individuals, institutions and ideas. Topics include an introduction to African heritage, the slave trade and slavery throughout early American history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, the creation of racial advancement organizations, twentieth-century urbanization and nationalism, and the struggle for civil rights, political power and cultural expression from mid-century to the present.
