ELA 260 — Arab Cinema
The course introduces students to the history and to the contemporary diversity of Arab cinema as an artistic and social form, and as a political instrument. It examines an array of Arab films from the early 20th century to the present. Readings and screenings investigate these major areas: the construction of identity, socio-political and cultural change, Islam, history and modernity, the quest for freedom, women and sexuality. Theclass is taught in English and prior knowledge of Arabic is not necessary.
