This course is a survey of the history of the Roman state from its origins as anItalian city-state to the demise of the western empire in the fifth century CE with an emphasis on the evolution of Roman law and political institutions, warfare and military organization, social and demographic change, economy, daily life, family life and the role of women, religion and the rise of Christianity, sports and leisure, literary and cultural achievements, and the continuing influence of Roman civilization on our own time.CUNY Pathways: Flexible Core-World Cultures & Global Issues
