PGOT20 — Substance Use Treatment
With the recognition that addiction affects everyone in the family, family-involved treatment for substance use disorders has played a prominent role in effective and sustainable recovery. This course will take a broad look at the therapeutic approaches for inclusion of the family in recovery and address those supports that have proved essential in rebuilding a sober and satisfying life. This includes family education, mutual self-help groups such as Alanon or Family Anonymous, and family therapy, either as part of primary treatment or during the recovery phase. Students will explore the purposes of family-involved treatment, identify family strengths and resources, and discover ways to ameliorate the impact of addiction on both the identified patient and the family.
