BAS200 — COMPASS Test Preparation

The purpose of this class is to prepare individuals to take the COMPASS test for placement in college level classes at the community college. The course may include one of all of the following components: Mathematics, Reading, and/or Writing. Students will learn why the COMPASS test is given and how students are placed based on the results. Emphasis will be on test taking skills (including elimination of multiple choice answers, reducing test anxiety, skimming, using context clues, reading the question, answering negative questions, time management, hedge phrases, key words, testing on the computer, etc.). Students will have pre and post assessments in areas of focus. Practice tests will be incorporated into the class. Skill development in areas of weakness will be addressed as appropriate. Mathematics skills may include the following components: basic math review, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Reading instruction will cover active and critical reading strategies. Writing instruction will include mechanics, punctuation, verbs, sentences, and essay writing (transitions, purpose/tone/voice, editing/revising). This class may be offered as a short class that offers only test taking tips and tricks, or as a longer class that includes more focus on actual skill development in the areas tested on the COMPASS test.
