This class for low intermediate readers is to prepare students to take Pre-GED/GED classes. Reading activities offered in this classroom will help students increase their reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Students will read passages in which they must discern between fact and opinion as well as cause and effect. Students will learn multiple ways to find meaning of unfamiliar words, including using context clues. Students will interpret newspaper, magazine articles, and sustained works of fiction in order to answer literal, evaluative, and inferential questions. As part of their writing activities, students will understand basic rules of grammar, including parts of speech, clauses, sentences, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, plurals, verb tense, and verb forms. This class will cover simple, complex, and compound sentences in multiple tenses, including perfect tenses. Students will have the opportunity to write 3-5 sentence paragraphs, letters, memos, emails, and simple 3 paragraph essays. The main contextual focus of this class is the workplace. All activities should have a workforce focus or applicaiton, which is communicated to the student.
