This Career Pathways course is designed to give students the writing skills that they need to advance to GED Preparation classes and to get/keep a job. Students will apply knowledge of English vocabulary, descriptions, tone and language structure to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. As part of the writing process, students learn how to utilize various pre-writing techniques. Instruction in this class will include the five-step writing process for specific purposes (POWER). The class will cover parts of the essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion) as well as writing well developed paragraphs. Students will practice composing simple, narrative descriptions and short essays on familiar topics. Grammar in context (preferably in the context of student writing) will be covered. Sentence structure, verb tenses, subject- verb agreement, parts of speech, punctuation, and other grammatical concepts should be covered as part of this class. Types of writing beyond essays will be explored--this will include resumes, business letters, emails, etc. The main contextual focus of this class is the workplace. All activities should have a workforce focus of application, which is communicated to the student. The TABE Language test may be given as part of this class.
