BAS350 — Foundations of ESL Writing
This Career Pathways class is for intermediate ESL students who want to improve their writing skills for citizenship, post-secondary education, job training, working on the job, or functioning fully as citizens of the US. Students will receive instruction in grammar and writing skills. The class will cover verb tenses including simple present, negative simple present, simple past, and future. Singular and plural nouns, adjectives, writing and asking simple sentences, simple commands, and questions will be taught. Students will be introduced to imperatives, modals, infinitives, quantity words, as well as comparative/superlative structures. Students will cover punctuation marks: period, comma, quotation marks, apostrophe, etc. Simple, complex, and compound sentences will be introduced. Students will get instruction in writing effective paragraphs and simple essays, letters, and resumes. The class will also cover the topic of plagarism. Journaling is recommended as a tool in this classroom. The instruction will be contextualized around civics and the rights/responsibilities of citizenship (including working and participating in the community).
