BAS506 — Work Keys to Success
This class is designed for students who have the goal of entering employment while they are pursuing their GED. Course components include Job Readiness, Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, Use of Technology, and Work Keys Assessment. The Work Readiness component will include completion of a career interest survey, learning about high demand occupations and industry clusters, sampling Donley Job Training programs, writing resumes and cover letters, completing applications (on-line and paper), corresponding through e-mail, and demonstrating self management skills. The Reading for Information component will follow the reading curriculum designed to address Work Keys areas (WIN and/or Key Train). Instruction will include Work Keys 3, 4, and 5, and will examine the following applicable areas: word meanings, topics and main ideas, finding information, word part clues, making inferences, cause and effect, technical jargon, interpreting information, and applying instructions. The Applied Math component will include Work Keys Levels 3, 4, and 5, and will cover the following applicable areas: fractions and decimals, measurement, positive and negative numbers, percentages, averages, proportions, diagrams, and perimeter/area. The Work Keys assessment will be offered upon successful completion (90% attendance or 45 total hours participation). Other components will be addressed as instructionally embedded activities.
