Foundations of English for NNS is and integrated multi-skills course combining reading, writing, speaking, and listening for students. The course focus is developing English language skills for both social and academic communication. Oral activities stress understanding basic conversations, responding to questions, and expressing ideas and feelings. Reading development emphasizes word decoding skills and reading comprehension. Writing development focuses on clear written expression through use of appropriate grammar and syntax, as well as the fundamentals of usage and mechanics. Grammar and vocabulary developoment cycles through all four areas. All four skill areas are linked and reinforce each other. Instruction is contextualized around work, academic, and civic goals. Students must attend a placement session and a 15 hour orientation period before being enrolled in this class.
