BAS541A — Summer Bridge Credit Prep ESL
Summer Bridge Credit Prep ESL is an intensive course designed to improve the reading and writing skills of non-native English speakers who are transitioning or preparing to transition from high school to the college setting. Reading development emphasizes word decoding skills and reading comprehension. Students will participate in a group reading experience and will take part in classroom and small group discussions about readings. Students will be exposed to college textbooks and will understand the level of reading and writing necessary for college success. Writing development focuses on clear written expression through use of appropriate grammar and syntax, as well as the fundamentals of usage and mechanics. Students will improve their construction of sentences and paragraphs, the building blocks of a 3-5 paragraph essay. Math vocabulary will also be introduced. Study skills, time management techniques, and test taking strategies will be highlighted. Students will also learn how to navigate the LCCC website and the portal. Each student will create a Powerpoint presentation that they will deliver to the class. They will also partake in a career-focused team project. Students in this program will have the opportunity to tour LCCC's main campus and shadow a credit class. They will also visit a four-year state university.
