BAS548A — Foundations of ESL Transitions
Develop English language skills for social and academic communication. This is an integrated multi-skills course combining listening, speaking, writing, reading and grammar in which students goals and writings determine the curriculum. Students will be learning language through authentic context. The instruction will focus on keeping students actively involved in the learning process--so they can determine what skills they need to accomplish their individual goals. Grammar objectives for this class include future tense, comparatives/superlatives, imperatives, infinitives, modals, count/noncount nouns, quantity words, adjectives, and adverbs. Writing objectives include short written answers in response to questions on a piece of writing, 4 sentence paragraphs on familiar topics. Speaking and listening objectives include being able to listen to information and ask questions about it; take notes, and give short (2-3 minute) presentation on a familiar topic. Reading objectives include reading a short passage/story and answering questions using inference; locating information in a magazine/newspaper article on an unfamiliar topic, and distinguishing fact from fiction on an unfamiliar topic. Post-secondary transition topics will include, but not limited to, educational planning, note-taking, navigating websites, using email, taking tests, college resources, how to find information, understanding the admissions process, and gaining exposure to credit ESL classes. Transition to work topics will include, but not be limited to, choosing a career path, career planning, job search, on-the-job skills, career exposure, interviewing, resumes, cover letters, filling out applications, networking, teamwork, and workplace culture. Students must attend a 15 hour orientation period and placement testing before being enrolled in the class.
