This level of ESL is for individuals who are recommended through placement assessment for advanced noncredit ESL or who have successfully completed ESL II. Students will improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. There will be opportunities for instruction and practice in engaging in classroom discussion and presentations. Listening opportunities include taking notes from lectures and asking clarifying questions. Emphasis will be on word decoding and reading comprehension. Writing development will focus on clear written expression through the use of appropriate grammar and syntax as well as the fundamentals of usage and mechanics. Support may be provided to help students prepare for credit placement testing as appropriate. One component will include study skills, understanding the US educational system and navigating the college environment.
