0 credits · 38 hours

This Career Pathways class is for advanced ESL readers who want to improve their reading skills for post-secondary education, job training, working on the job, or to function fully as citizens of the U.S. Students will receive instruction in intensive vocabulary development--vocabulary will be specific to the contexts of their career pathways. Students will have the opportunity to read a sustained work of fiction or non-fiction. They will have the opportunity to do self-directed reading as well as classroom reading. As preparation for the college classroom, the instructor will give students support in taking notes on readings and having discussions on readings. Topics covered will include reading for main idea, understanding vocabulary in context, determining fact from opinion, using inference to answer questions, and locating information by skimming text. The main contextual focus of this class is the workplace. All activities should have a workforce focus or application, which is communicated to the student.
